Technology without power is useless- a computer left unplugged will never realize it’s full potential. Even if it has the best programming in the world, it won’t make a difference until you plug it in.
It’s the same thing with us. Until we activate the power of the cross, we will never achieve the level of effectiveness that God has planned for our lives.
In this book, Tony Evans explains exactly how to do that- basing everything on scripture.
Tony Evans is an excellent writer, using vivid analogies and relevant stories to demonstrate the importance of placing the cross front and center in our lives: “If we leave out the cross, we are only left with the empty shell of religion.”
He explains how “religion”, as an external appearance or activity without any spiritual substance, gets in the way of a true relationship with Christ. We need to put our faith in Him and His ability to overcome the challenges we face in our lives, by crucifying ourselves with Christ (Gal. 2:20) and building our lives on kingdom principles which cannot be shaken (Heb 12:28,29).
He also explains the importance of knowing the difference between power and authority- though the enemy has the appearance of power, he lost his authority over us through Christ’s death on the cross- something Evans likens to an unloaded gun; it may seem frightening or discouraging, but once we realize that there are no bullets in that gun, we can begin to overcome the issues in our lives with renewed faith and hope. “Satan no longer has the last word, because Jesus Christ now sits high above all rule and authority.”
I especially enjoyed the section on the importance of communion, which was deeply powerful. Evans shows that when you receive communion, you are confessing the victory of the cross over the enemy, where Jesus disarmed the rulers and authorities (Colossians 2:13-15). I actually used this chapter as a reading for a home bible study / communion with my family, which was awesome.
Activating the Power of the Cross is a fantastic resource for believers who are looking to grow in their faith and relationship with Jesus Christ. This book is short (88 pages) but very powerful, and I will be recommending it to family and friends, as well as looking for more books by Tony Evans in the near future!
