A Marine fighter pilot shares the story of his search for truth while serving his country.

Growing up in a secular family, Jason Ladd was apathetic when it came to the subject of God or religion. With his eye on a career as a Marine fighter pilot, he was able to (somewhat) comfortably avoid the subject altogether -until a simple question sent him on a journey to discover the real truth about life, God, and faith.

Yet another question, “How badly do you want this?” -one that stared him down often during his training to become a Marine- became a driving force behind his search for answers. Examining various worldviews on spirituality, Ladd compares their conflicting ideas while confronting the many doubts and questions he faced, such as “Why would a good person like me need Jesus?” And “How can there be a loving God when so many bad things happen in the world?”

Throughout the book, Ladd describes the rigorous training process he went through in the Marines, the lessons he learned, and how those lessons parallel the Christian lifestyle. He also tackles some major areas for concern in a Christian’s walk, such as sexual purity, alcohol, and addiction, and why and how they affect our lives and the lives of those around us. In addition, he explores the current stigma of Christian men being “unmanly”, and society’s modern caricature of the Christian.

Two quotes at the opening of each chapter show the stark contrast between the Christian and non-Christian worldview, highlighting the importance and implications of our beliefs. Ladd warns about the dangers of spiritual apathy, and stresses the importance of parents involvement in their children’s worldview, while providing Marine-based strategies for overcoming the many challenges to our faith.

Part memoir, part Apologetics, part Christian life-strategy reminiscent of the movie War Room, this book offers readers a studious look at why your worldview matters, and the importance of being able to effectively defend and live out your faith. Whether you are an established Christian, or someone who, like the author was, are currently seeking answers to life’s questions yourself, this book has a lot to offer. One Of The Few is an intelligent, inspiring, and entertaining read- I cannot recommend it highly enough!
